Focus areas
Our four priority areas
AP2’s sustainability work focuses on four areas which are assessed to be most material to the Fund: climate, biodiversity, human rights and corporate governance. For each area, long-term goals have been established to guide our work.
Our approach is based on the principle of double materiality. This means that we assess both how sustainability issues may affect the Fund’s investments and how our investments may impact people and the environment. It also considers the priorities of the Fund’s stakeholders.
FOCUS AREA 1
Climate
Climate change is already affecting people, communities and economies around the world. For AP2, climate-related work is therefore a central component of a long-term and responsible investment approach.
LONG-TERM GOAL
AP2 shall achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045 at the latest.
FOCUS AREA 2
Biodiversity
Nature and ecosystems are fundamental to both human life and economic activity. At the same time, biodiversity is declining at a rapid pace, which entails significant risks for society, the environment and the economy.
LONG-TERM GOAL
AP2 will contribute to a net positive development for nature by 2030.
FOCUS AREA 3
Human Rights
Respect for human rights is a fundamental part of sustainable development. It is also a key prerequisite for ensuring that the transition to a more sustainable society is fair and equitable.
LONG-TERM GOALS
Human rights perspectives is fully integrated in every aspect of the Fund´s activities.
AP2 must continue to implement the UN Guiding Principles, and as from 2025, the Fund’s activities must be conducted in line with these principles.
FOCUS AREA 4
Corporate Governance
Strong corporate governance is essential for long-term value creation. AP2’s starting point is that well-managed companies with clear governance structures, relevant expertise and diverse boards are better equipped to manage risks and generate sustainable returns.
LONG-TERM GOALS
AP2’s overall corporate governance goal is to contribute to a better return in the portfolio, and the Fund therefore acts actively by voting on relevant issues in all listed companies.
This is pursued through engagement, voting and collaboration with other stakeholders, including on issues such as corporate governance, diversity and board composition.
